Tabor
2nd Amendment
Like so many American families, the Tabor family, has a tradition of hunting
and fishing together. On many occasions, four generations of Tabors have been
together in North Carolina’s great outdoors – spending time together
away from the rush and worry of everyday life.
Not surprisingly, we greatly value our 2nd Amendment rights that protect the
ability of Americans to own and operate firearms.
That’s why I’m concerned when I hear gun control proponents calling
for intrusive new laws that would take away the rights of law abiding citizens
to own firearms.
Clearly, we need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Indeed, we should
increase penalties for those who use guns in the commission of a crime. Armed
robbery is one of the most serious crimes committed and long mandatory prison
penalties should face those criminal thugs who choose this route.
In addition, convicted felons who break their parole terms by obtaining firearms
must be punished. If I am elected to Congress, I will work to accomplish both
these goals.
Families with children should teach their children common-sense gun safety while
keeping firearms out of the hands of those to young or immature to maintain safety
standards. Too often, tragic accidents happen in the home due to folks not using
common sense, safety procedures.
However, I strongly oppose those liberals who believe the answer to such problems
is to simply ban the ownership of firearms or to infringe on the 2nd Amendment
rights of law-abiding citizens.
For generations, tens-of-millions of American households have owned firearms
for hunting, sport shooting and self-defense. The vast majority of these citizens
are safely and freely exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. They should not
have these rights taken away by a liberal political movement that seeks to ignore
our Constitution.
The freedoms in America – the right to free speech, to protest, to be free
from unreasonable search and seizure, to travel freely, the freedom of every
citizen to pursue their hopes and dreams and the freedom to own firearms – are
part of our uniquely American way of life. A way of life that is the best on
earth. Let’s all work together to keep it that way.
