Jobs Plan
My families
business, Revival Soy, was started in the basement of our family home
almost six years ago. Through hard work, long hours,
and the blessings of God, our company is now one of the top three
fastest growing companies in the Piedmont Triad. Revival Soy
has averaged a 200% growth each year over the past four years and is
a completely debt free company. We currently employ over 130
people
in the 5th Congressional District.
I personally
believe that better days are ahead for North Carolina and the United
States. It’s
true that our state has been hit hard with job losses that have put
many good, hard working people
out of work. We must strive to protect the businesses we have
while working
to restore and rebuild our economy by bringing other good, well-paying
jobs to our state. This will require marketing the 5th District
to businesses. I believe we can make North Carolina the most business-friendly
state in the nation.
In Congress,
tirelessly working to bring new businesses to our state will be a top
priority of mine. Unlike
many politicians
running for
office, I have a successful background and experience of running
a business that I will put to work for the people of the 5th
Congressional District. As a successful small businessman,
I know what Congress
needs
to do to help businesses of all sizes grow, prosper, and most
importantly, create new jobs.
Develop
New Industries
North Carolina has long had an economy centered around agriculture,
manufacturing and textiles. These are very important industries
to our economy. We must work to grow these industries while
attracting new industries into our state like research companies,
development
companies, agriculture companies and pharmaceutical companies.
With
our dedicated workforce and strong educational system, North
Carolina has the necessary tools to attract new industry.
As your next Congressman,
I will use my background in sales and marketing to bring
these new companies to our state. I will also work with state and
local officials
to ensure that the federal government is a partner in bringing
jobs to North Carolina. One example. North Carolina houses
many brave men
and women who fight to protect our freedom yet North Carolina
has very few military contracts. I will work to change that.
Lower
Taxes
for
Small Business
Small businesses provide over 2/3rds of the new jobs in
our economy. Congress should recognize this and take steps
to
help small businesses
continue to grow. One of the easiest ways to accomplish
this is to lower their taxes. When the tax burden of a
small business
is
lowered,
they will have more money to finance the growth of their
business. A growing business means more jobs.
I believe
we need to make President Bush’s tax cuts permanent.
Included in these tax cuts were many provisions helping
small business including accelerating small business expensing provisions,
cuts in
the Capital Gains tax and a temporary repeal of the so-called “Death
Tax” that places such a large burden on small business
people. Yet, despite the good that these tax cuts are
doing for the economy,
these tax cuts are set to expire in a few years unless
Congress makes them permanent. In Congress, I will not
only fight to make President
Bush’s tax cuts permanent, I will continue to work
to further lower the tax burden on small business because
this will cause our
economy to grow and allow the creation of more jobs.
Tort
Reform
While I hold a deep respect for the right to access our
civil justice system when someone has been hurt or
injured by the
acts of others,
I believe we must reform our system of civil litigation.
The number of civil lawsuits has tripled in the past
40 years. We must reform
the legal system to limit the number of frivolous lawsuits
being filed in our court system. Often these have no
real merit
and
are used simply
to extort payment from the business being targeted.
Unfortunately, this costs us jobs. When a business is forced to spend
thousands of dollars defending against frivolous lawsuits
they have
less money to
expand their business, invest in research or hire more
people. Sometimes the lawsuits result in businesses
closing
or having
to lay people off.
In Congress,
I will work to pass reasonable reforms to our civil justice system
that will help limit frivolous
lawsuits,
abolish
joint and several
liability provisions, and limit outrageous punitive
damage
awards that are completely out of proportion.
Job
Training Assistance
It is vitally important that those who are no longer
able to work in their chosen industry be given
the assistance necessary
to train
for
another occupation. I believe that giving the unemployed
the help they need to become qualified for a new
job is
a wise
investment. In Congress,
I will work to ensure that each and every unemployed
worker who wants to become trained in a new field
will be able
to do so
regardless
of
their financial situation.
I will
also work with the Community College system to develop new programs
that address chronic
job
loss and
that are
more flexible
than the traditional
two-year degree tract. If we utilize the resource
we have in the Community Colleges, we can train
workers more quickly
for
jobs
that are currently
available and use this program as a means to
attract new business to our area. If employers know that
when
they
look to our area
they will
have ready trained workers, they will be more
likely to locate here.
Reducing
and Streamlining Federal Regulations
Complying with the myriad of federal regulations
imposed upon businesses is simply too costly
and time consuming.
We must
continue to cut
through the bureaucratic red tape that the
federal government has imposed on
business. Too many businesses are forced to
spend thousands, if not millions, a year in costs associated
with complying
with federal
regulations.
I believe the federal government needs to take
a hard look at each and every regulation affecting
business
and ask
if it is
really
necessary to protect the health and safety
of consumers and employees. I also
believe that any new or existing federal regulation
must be reasonable and affordable to business
in order to
take affect.
Failure to
adhere to this simple standard ultimately costs
our
economy jobs.
Making
Health Care Costs Affordable
Health insurance costs to employers and employees
are quickly getting out of control. When
health insurance costs are
too expensive many
businesses are not able to hire new employees.
For some businesses the skyrocketing costs
of health insurance
have even forced
them to lay off employees.
We must bring health insurance costs under
control. In Congress, I will work to pass
reforms that
enable small
businesses
to purchase health insurance as a group.
I will also work to reduce
the costs
that
medical malpractice lawsuits bring to the
system by supporting medical malpractice
reforms.
Health insurance
costs must
be brought under control.
The cost of health insurance should not
stand as a barrier to growing a business and bringing
new
jobs
to the economy.
Opening
New Markets
for American Products
American businesses and their workers
are the best in the world. We should
be able
to compete
with
anyone in
the
world. Yet,
for many American
businesses, the playing field is not
even. Unfortunately, this inequity costs
American
workers jobs. As
your next Congressman, I will work
to expand global markets for American
business. I will also work to ensure
that existing
trade agreements
are enforced
to prevent
illegal
imports and the transshipment of textiles.
There is
no doubt that we have the best, most
qualified workers in
the world.
If given
the chance
to compete on a level playing field,
nothing will stop American business from
succeeding.
Conclusion
We are all incredibly blessed to live
in this great country. As the world’s leading economic power, there is no reason why people
who want a good paying job should not be able to get one. In Congress,
I will not rest until that is true. I firmly believe that the best
way to grow our economy and bring new jobs to the 5th Congressional
District is to continue to improve the climate for businesses of
all sizes. You have my word that I will use my experience helping
to run
a successful small business to work day and night to ensure that
the necessary steps are taken to improve the economy in the 5th Congressional
District and bring new jobs and businesses to our state. |
