Over 60 members of the community participated in Kernersville Fire
Departmentís annual fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy. The
anticipated goal this year was $32,000. A total of $23,000 was
raised through the help of supporters and participants.
According to MDA officials, over $800,000 was raised for the 2004
fiscal year in the Piedmont Triad area. Officials say 70 to 81 cents
of the dollar goes towards patient care and research.
Some of those programs that are included in the patient care are
summer camps for MD patients ages six to 21, providing wheelchairs
for patients and free clinical visits for up to four visits.
According to officials, the association holds at least a dozen Lock
ups per year and usually comes close to reaching its goal.
Fifth District candidate Nathan Tabor was among the participants.
This was his second year in the Lock up. Last year, Tabor was able
to raise $2300 for the association. His goal was to raise $2500. He
posted bail at $1435.
Muscular Dystrophy weakens and deteriorates the skeletal muscle,
which often times leads to paralysis.
ìThe most common types of muscular dystrophy result in dramatic
physical weakness, so children lose the ability to do things like
walk, sit upright, breathe easily, and move their arms and hands,î
according to the Nemours Foundation.
The Kernersville Fire Department plays an active role in supporting
the MDA through various fundraisers. During the summer, firefighters
can be found collecting money on the streets with their boots.
